Amit Samanta of the Bharatiya Janata Party has emerged victorious in the Amta constituency of West Bengal, defeating the incumbent Sukanta Kumar Paul of the All India Trinamool Congress by a margin of 4,454 votes. The result came after all 20 rounds of counting were completed, marking a significant shift in this politically volatile seat located in Howrah district.
Previous Election Performance
Sukanta Kumar Paul had won the Amta seat in the 2021 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election with 1,02,445 votes, securing a 49 percent vote share. He had defeated the BJP's Debtanu Bhattacharya, who garnered 76,240 votes (37 percent), by a margin of 26,205 votes. However, the 2026 election saw a reversal of fortunes as the BJP successfully wrested the seat from the TMC.
Key Issues in Amta
The Amta constituency, comprising Amta-I and Amta-II blocks, faces several pressing issues that dominated the election campaign. These include inadequate irrigation and drainage facilities for paddy and vegetable farming, poor rural road connectivity linking villages to markets in Howrah and Uluberia, and limited access to drinking water. Voters have also demanded the expansion of government health centers, schools, and non-farm employment opportunities to supplement agriculture. Rapid peri-urban growth has further strained local civic services, making infrastructure development a key electoral concern.
Historical Political Trends
Amta has witnessed a shifting political landscape over the years. It was once a Congress stronghold under Asit Mitra, who won the seat in 2011 and 2016. Earlier, the CPI(M) held sway, with Pratyush Mukherjee representing the constituency from 2001 to 2006. Sukanta Paul's victory in 2021 consolidated the TMC's hold on this seat, but the BJP's recent win indicates a renewed challenge. The constituency falls under the Uluberia Lok Sabha constituency, which was retained by the TMC's Sajda Ahmed in the 2024 general elections with a margin of 2,18,673 votes, reinforcing the party's alignment at the parliamentary level.
Broader Election Context
The 2026 West Bengal assembly elections have seen intense competition between the TMC and the BJP, with the latter making gains in several constituencies. In Amta, the BJP's victory reflects its strategy to expand its footprint in the state. Meanwhile, the TMC continues to hold sway in other parts of Howrah and the Uluberia Lok Sabha segment. The results are part of a larger electoral trend across India, with key battles in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam, and Puducherry also drawing attention.
As the counting process concluded, the victory of Amit Samanta underscores the BJP's growing influence in West Bengal, while the TMC faces the challenge of retaining its strongholds in the face of a resurgent opposition.
