Historical Context

In the 2021 assembly election, Jayanta Naskar from the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) won the seat. He had also won the constituency in the 2011 and 2016 assembly elections, representing AITC. However, Naskar passed away in June 2021, resulting in the seat falling vacant. The subsequent by-election was again won by the Trinamool Congress; its candidate Subrata Mondal defeated his nearest challenger, Palash Rana of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by 143,051 votes.

The 2021 assembly election saw the AITC secure 54% of the vote share, while BJP's Barun Pramanik received 41.89% of the votes. Trinamool's vote share rose to 87.19% in the bypoll, while the BJP's fell to 9.95%. The current result indicates a resurgence of BJP in the constituency.

Broader Election Trends

The West Bengal election results have shown mixed trends across the state. While Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress faces challenges in some constituencies, BJP has managed to retain its stronghold in Assam. In Tamil Nadu, Vijay's TVK party has emerged as a formidable force, pushing DMK and AIADMK to the margins.
