NEW DELHI: In a significant political development, Bharatiya Janata Party's Dibyendu Adhikari emerged victorious in the Egra assembly constituency, defeating the sitting Trinamool Congress MLA Tarun Kumar Maity. The outcome was confirmed as votes for the West Bengal assembly elections were counted on Monday.
Election Results 2026
According to data released by the Election Commission, Adhikari secured a total of 142,670 votes, while Maity received 116,978 votes. The margin of victory for Adhikari stood at 25,692 votes. This result marks a shift from the 2021 election, when Maity had won the seat with 125,763 votes, representing 52 percent of the vote share, defeating BJP's Arup Das, who garnered 107,272 votes or 45 percent, by a margin of 18,491 votes.
Historically, the Egra constituency has been a stronghold of the Trinamool Congress since 2006. Before that, independent candidate Prabodh Chandra Sinha held the seat from 1977 to 2001. Maity had succeeded Samares Das, who represented the All India Trinamool Congress in 2011 and 2016, maintaining TMC's continuous hold on the constituency.

The election campaign in Egra highlighted several critical issues affecting the rural belt. These included the need for improved irrigation and flood control measures to support paddy and vegetable farming, better road connectivity linking villages under the Egra Community Development Block to markets in Contai, and ensuring drinking water security. Additionally, residents demanded more government health centres, schools, and local employment opportunities.
Egra falls under the Medinipur Lok Sabha constituency, which was won by Trinamool Congress candidate June Malia in the 2024 general elections by a margin of 27,191 votes.
