NEW DELHI: In a decisive victory, Kaushik Rai of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the Lakhipur assembly constituency in Assam, securing 1,25,302 votes. He defeated Congress candidate M. Lakhipur Constituency Overview

Lakhipur is one of the 126 seats in the Assam Legislative Assembly, located in the Barak Valley. It serves as the headquarters of the Lakhipur subdivision and falls under the Silchar Lok Sabha constituency. This is a general (unreserved) seat.

In the 2026 assembly elections, the BJP fielded Kaushik Rai, while the Congress nominated M. Santi Kumar Singha. The constituency was formed in 1951 and has seen 15 Assembly elections and one bypoll. Historically, the Congress party has dominated the seat, winning it 12 times. Veteran leader Dinesh Prasad Goala was a key figure, securing seven victories in 1983, 1985, 1991, 1996, 2001, 2006, and 2011.

Political Legacy and Shift

Following Dinesh Prasad Goala's death in 2014, his son Rajdeep Goala carried forward the political legacy. He won the by-election that same year, defeating BJP candidate Sanjay Kumar Thakur by 9,837 votes. Rajdeep Goala went on to win again in the 2016 assembly elections. However, the BJP registered its first victory in Lakhipur in 2021, marking a significant shift in the constituency's electoral trend.

This year's landslide victory for Kaushik Rai underscores the BJP's growing influence in the region. The 2026 election results across Assam, along with other states like Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Kerala, and Puducherry, are being closely watched.
