NEW DELHI: In the 2026 West Bengal assembly elections, Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Parthasarathi Chatterjee emerged victorious in the Ranaghat Uttar Paschim constituency, defeating his nearest rival Tapas Ghosh from the Trinamool Congress. The constituency, located in Nadia district, is a general category seat that has witnessed significant electoral shifts over the years.

Voter Demographics and Turnout

Ranaghat Uttar Paschim had a total of 2,32,716 registered voters for the 2026 Assembly election, comprising 1,19,177 male voters, 1,13,531 female voters, and 8 voters belonging to the third gender. The voter turnout across West Bengal was exceptionally high, with nearly 93 per cent of the electorate casting their ballots across 294 seats in two phases on April 23 and April 29. This marked the highest turnout since Independence, driven largely by urban participation and women voters outpacing men.

In the 2021 Assembly elections, the constituency had 265,846 electors and recorded 223,193 valid votes. Parthasarathi Chatterjee, then representing the BJP, won the seat with 113,637 votes, defeating the All India Trinamool Congress's Sankar Singha, who secured 90,509 votes. The margin of victory was 23,128 votes.

In the 2016 Assembly elections, Ranaghat Uttar Paschim had 243,481 electors and 210,586 valid votes. Congress candidate Sankar Singha won the seat with 109,607 votes, while Trinamool Congress candidate Parthasarathi Chatterjee finished second with 86,187 votes, losing by a margin of 23,420 votes.

Earlier, in the 2011 Assembly elections, the constituency had 211,540 electors and 186,337 valid votes. Trinamool Congress candidate Partha Sarathi Chatterjee won the seat with 101,395 votes, defeating CPI(M) candidate Mina Bhattacharya, who secured 74,051 votes. The margin of victory was 27,344 votes.

Constituency Profile

Ranaghat Uttar Paschim has a predominantly urban profile, with 72.50 per cent of voters residing in urban areas and 27.50 per cent in rural pockets. According to the 2011 Census, Scheduled Castes account for 29.80 per cent of the population and Scheduled Tribes for 2.25 per cent. The constituency's voter turnout has remained consistently high, peaking at 88.09 per cent in 2011 and declining to 82.30 per cent in 2024. In intervening elections, turnout stood at 86.56 per cent in 2016, 84.43 per cent in 2019, and 83.96 per cent in 2021.

The constituency had 267,218 registered voters in 2024, up from 265,846 in 2021 and 254,242 in 2019. The 2026 elections saw a marginal dip in voter numbers but maintained high engagement levels. The victory of Parthasarathi Chatterjee underscores the BJP's continued influence in the region, while the TMC faces challenges in retaining its strongholds.
