NEW DELHI: Santanu Pramanik of the Bharatiya Janata Party emerged victorious in the Bhagabanpur assembly constituency, securing a decisive margin of 20,878 votes. According to the Election Commission, Pramanik polled 130,586 votes, while his nearest rival, Manab Kumar Parua of the Trinamool Congress, garnered 109,708 votes. This victory allows the BJP to retain the seat, reinforcing its presence in the Purba Medinipur district.
Previous Representation and Historical Context
Before this election, the Bhagabanpur seat was held by Rabindranath Maity of the BJP. In the 2021 assembly elections, Maity had won with 121,480 votes, accounting for a 55% vote share. He defeated Trinamool's Ardhendu Maity by a margin of 27,549 votes, with a voter turnout of 90.64%. The constituency, designated as General Seat No. 214, encompasses the Bhagabanpur I CD block and parts of Bhagabanpur II. It falls under the Kanthi Lok Sabha constituency, which was won by BJP's Soumendu Adhikari in the 2024 general elections.
Historically, the seat has witnessed a shift in political allegiance. The BJP captured it from the All India Trinamool Congress in 2021, breaking the long-time hold of AITC's Ardhendu Maity, who had represented the constituency from 2001 to 2016. Prior to that, the Left Front had dominated the area for decades.
Key Issues and Local Economy
Major concerns in the constituency include rural unemployment and the out-migration of youth, driven by limited industrial development. Farmers face challenges such as irrigation shortages and flood damage to paddy crops. Poor road infrastructure hampers connectivity, while law-and-order issues and economic stagnation have fueled public discontent. The local economy is primarily based on agriculture, with betel farming being a significant activity.
The 2026 assembly elections are pending, and the results from Bhagabanpur reflect broader trends in the state. The BJP's performance in Bengal, along with outcomes in other states like Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam, and Puducherry, is being closely watched.
