BJP's Unopposed Rahuri Bypoll Ambition Crumbles as Seven Candidates Stay in Race
The Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) ambitious bid to secure an unopposed victory in the crucial Rahuri assembly bypoll in Nashik district has been decisively thwarted. Despite intense political negotiations and high-level interventions, the final day for withdrawal of nominations on Thursday saw seven candidates firmly remaining in the electoral fray, setting the stage for a competitive contest.
Last-Minute Withdrawals Fail to Clear the Field
Election officials reported a flurry of activity on the withdrawal deadline, with as many as 23 aspirants stepping back from the race. However, this significant reduction was insufficient to deliver the BJP its desired walkover. The remaining contestants include Govind Mokate representing the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) or NCP (SP), and Santosh Cholke of the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA), alongside the BJP's own nominee, Akshay Kardile.
Political analysts are now framing the bypoll as a direct and high-stakes confrontation between the ruling Mahayuti alliance, led by the BJP, and the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition. The Rahuri constituency has historically been a fiercely contested political arena, dominated by the longstanding rivalry between the Tanpure and Kardile families, making this election a critical test of local and state-level political strength.
A Legacy of Family Rivalry and Political Maneuvering
The seat's recent history underscores its volatile nature. In the 2014 assembly elections, Shivaji Kardile of the BJP won comfortably. The 2019 polls saw Prajakt Tanpure of the then-undivided NCP reclaim the constituency, later serving as a minister of state. The 2024 assembly elections witnessed the seat returning to the Kardile family. The untimely death of Shivaji Kardile necessitated this byelection, prompting the BJP to field his son, Akshay, thereby marking the next generation's entry into this enduring political feud.
Prajakt Tanpure had initially shown keen interest in contesting the bypoll, potentially reigniting the classic rivalry. In a dramatic turn of events on the final day for filing nominations, BJP state president Ravindra Chavan and district guardian minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil held a crucial meeting with Tanpure at his office. The political maneuvering reached its peak when Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis personally spoke to Tanpure over the phone during this meeting.
Following this high-level intervention, Tanpure made the consequential decision not to file his nomination papers. The NCP (SP) swiftly responded by authorizing Govind Mokate to enter the race as their candidate, ensuring the opposition's presence remained strong.
Chief Minister Confirms Political Understanding
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, speaking to reporters at the Shirdi airport on Thursday, openly confirmed that Tanpure's absence from the ballot was the result of a strategic political understanding reached at the highest levels. Fadnavis praised Tanpure's contributions, stating, "Tanpure's performance in Rahuri has been commendable. He is a capable leader. I personally requested him not to contest this byelection in the interest of political harmony and he graciously accepted."
This statement highlights the BJP's concerted effort to smooth the electoral path for Akshay Kardile by neutralizing a formidable opponent. Despite this success in sidelining Tanpure, the party's broader goal of an uncontested victory was ultimately unrealized. The entry of multiple candidates, including those from significant opposition factions, guarantees a vibrant and closely watched democratic process in the upcoming bypoll.
