NEW DELHI: Rupjyoti Kurmi of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged victorious in the 2026 Assam Assembly election from the Mariani constituency, securing a total of 79,632 votes. He defeated Raijor Dal candidate Gyanashree Bora, who contested in alliance with the Congress, by a decisive margin of 26,840 votes.
Voter Turnout and Demographics
The Mariani Assembly constituency, a general (unreserved) seat located in the Jorhat district, had a total of 164,989 registered voters on the electoral rolls for the 2026 election. Among them, 80,156 were male, 84,832 were female, and one voter belonged to the third gender. Assam voted across all 126 seats on April 9, recording a turnout of over 85%, one of the highest in recent years. Notably, the surge in voting was observed not only in rural areas but also across urban centers, reflecting broad-based and enthusiastic voter participation across the state.
Historical Context
In the 2021 Assam Assembly elections, the Mariani constituency had 123,568 registered voters, with 95,838 valid votes cast. Congress candidate Rupjyoti Kurmi won the seat with 47,308 votes, while BJP candidate Ramani Tanti finished second with 44,862 votes, losing by a margin of 2,446 votes. In the 2016 Assembly elections, Mariani had 106,715 electors, with 90,548 valid votes recorded. Congress candidate Rupjyoti Kurmi won the seat with 36,701 votes, defeating Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) candidate Alok Kumar Ghosh, who secured 34,908 votes. The victory margin then was 1,793 votes.
Delimitation and Voter Growth
Following the 2023 delimitation exercise, the Mariani constituency continues to be part of the Jorhat Parliamentary constituency. According to the final electoral roll released on February 10, 2026, the constituency has 164,989 registered voters, up from around 122,128 voters in 2021.
