BJP's Santu Pan Wins Tarakeswar by 30,999 Votes

NEW DELHI: Santu Pan of the Bharatiya Janata Party won the Tarakeswar constituency with 1,16,901 votes, defeating Trinamool Congress candidate Ramendu Sinharay by a margin of 30,999 votes. Sinharay secured 85,902 votes. CPI(M)'s Adesh Khamrui finished third with 9,616 votes, followed by Congress's Bhabani Prasad Mondal with 1,077 votes.

Thirteen candidates contested from Tarakeswar in West Bengal's 2026 Assembly Election, along with NOTA. Tarakeswar (constituency no. 198) is located in Hooghly district and falls under the Arambag Lok Sabha constituency. The constituency takes its name from the famous Tarakeswar temple, a major Shiva pilgrimage site that draws lakhs of devotees annually. This religious significance gives the constituency a distinctive social character, with temple tourism and the surrounding economy being important aspects of local life. The area covers the Tarakeswar community development block and municipality.

In 2021, TMC's Ramendu Singha Roy won by a margin of 7,484 votes over BJP's Swapan Dasgupta. In 2016, the TMC also won here. Historically, the seat was associated with Marxist Forward Bloc, whose candidates contested on independent or CPI(M) tickets for many years. The seat's religious character means temple development and pilgrim facilities often feature as campaign talking points alongside agricultural and developmental issues.
