Historical Context

In the 2021 assembly elections, the incumbent MLA Mamata Bhunia of the TMC had retained the seat comfortably, defeating the BJP's Prashant Bera by a margin of approximately 26,842 votes. She had polled around 52 per cent of the total votes cast. Bhunia first came to prominence after the death of her husband, veteran TMC leader Ajit Bhunia, in 2012, winning the subsequent by-election. She went on to consolidate the TMC's hold over the constituency.

In 2016, Mamata Bhunia again prevailed, with the Left Front's CPI(M) providing the principal opposition at that time, before the BJP's dramatic rise in West Bengal. Historically, Daspur was a Left stronghold, with the CPI(M) dominating the seat across much of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, before the TMC began making inroads in the 2000s.

Significance of 2026 Results

The substitution of Mamata Bhunia with Ashis Hudait as the TMC candidate in 2026 was a significant change of face in a seat the party had held for over a decade. The BJP's victory marks a shift in the political landscape of this constituency.
