Bridge Construction Collapse in Ballia Claims Two Lives, Injures One
A devastating incident unfolded in the Turtipar area of Ballia district on Wednesday morning, where a steel framework of a pillar on an under-construction bridge over the Saryu river collapsed, leading to the deaths of at least two labourers and leaving one with grave injuries. The accident has raised serious concerns about safety standards at construction sites in the region.
Details of the Tragic Accident
The collapse occurred in the Ubhav police station jurisdiction, where labourers were actively engaged in installing the steel framework for the bridge. According to ASP (northern) Dinesh Kumar Shukla, the pillar gave way suddenly, trapping three workers under a heap of steel rods. The victims have been identified as Pappu, 3, and Amit, 29, both from Lakhimpur-Kheri district, and Jugal, 21, from Pilibhit district.
Eyewitnesses reported that the heavy rebar framework collapsed without warning, causing immediate panic and chaos at the construction site. Local residents gathered in large numbers, expressing outrage and demanding accountability for what they perceive as negligence in safety protocols.
Rescue and Medical Response
Ubhav police swiftly arrived at the scene and, with assistance from other labourers and locals, managed to rescue the trapped individuals. The trio was rushed to a local hospital, where Pappu and Amit were pronounced dead upon arrival. Jugal, who sustained severe injuries, was referred to the district hospital for advanced medical treatment. Legal proceedings and a thorough investigation into the incident are currently underway.
Official Investigation and Accountability
Ballia district magistrate M P Singh has taken prompt action by dispatching a team of officials, led by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), to the accident site. The team is tasked with probing the matter and submitting a detailed report on the cause of the collapse. The objective is to fix accountability and prevent such tragedies in the future.
