Chennai's GST Road Encroachments Targeted in Major Eviction Drive
In Chennai, numerous encroachments, including pushcart eateries, bunk shops, and small businesses, have overtaken pavements along GST Road, particularly in the Tambaram Sanatorium stretch. Despite periodic eviction drives by the Tambaram Corporation, these illegal structures persistently return, severely hindering pedestrian access and safety.
Corporation's Plan for Permanent Solution
To address this ongoing issue, the Tambaram Corporation has announced a significant initiative to clear encroachments and beautify pedestrian pathways along the 12-kilometer GST Road stretch under its jurisdiction. Officials have issued notices to approximately 300 shops and commercial establishments, demanding they vacate the pavements. Following the removal of these encroachments, the footpaths will be reconstructed using paver blocks to create a safer and more comfortable walking environment.
Additionally, the corporation plans to invest 96 lakh rupees in upgrading the pavements. This project will include improved street lighting and the installation of CCTV cameras to enhance monitoring capabilities and bolster public safety in the area.
Residents Voice Concerns Over Past Efforts
However, residents have expressed skepticism based on previous beautification attempts. V Saritha, secretary of the Ganesh Nagar Residents' Welfare Association, highlighted that earlier works in Chromepet and Pallavaram have left the areas in a worse state. "The plants are overgrown and not properly maintained, making the stretch an eyesore," she stated.
Saritha emphasized the need for clear demarcation of vending and non-vending zones to better control hawker activities. "On most pavements, bunk shops and bike mechanics occupy large portions, forcing pedestrians to walk on the road, which is dangerous," she added.
Health and Safety Issues Raised by Locals
K Arun Srinivasan, an advocate and resident of Chromepet, pointed out specific health concerns in areas like Radha Nagar, where over 100 fast food stalls operate on pavements. "Food is prepared in unhygienic conditions, yet large crowds gather between 6 PM and 9 PM daily. Despite numerous complaints to traffic police, no action has been taken. The food safety department must inspect these stalls and enforce regulations," he urged.
This eviction drive aims to not only reclaim pedestrian spaces but also address broader public health and safety issues, reflecting the corporation's commitment to urban improvement amidst resident criticisms.
