Chennai Sees Road Accident Decline, Tambaram Corridors Pose Grave Risk in 2025
Recent police statistics highlight a contrasting trend in road safety across the Chennai metropolitan region. While accident numbers within Chennai city limits have shown a significant decrease, the suburban corridors under Tambaram police jurisdiction continue to be perilous zones for motorists and pedestrians alike.
Comparative Casualty Figures Reveal Alarming Disparity
According to official data, Chennai city recorded 1,190 casualties in 2025, comprising 721 injuries and 469 fatalities. This marks a notable improvement from the previous year's tally of 2,612 casualties, which included 2,093 injuries and 519 deaths.
In stark contrast, the Tambaram region witnessed 2,171 casualties in 2025, with 1,686 individuals injured and 485 losing their lives. This figure represents an increase from the 2,130 casualties reported in the preceding year, which consisted of 1,624 injuries and 506 deaths.
Rash Driving Identified as Primary Culprit in Tambaram
Police analysis indicates that nearly 95% of accidents within Tambaram police limits are attributable to rash and negligent driving. Despite rigorous enforcement actions, including the filing of approximately 29,000 cases against motorists for overspeeding last year, collisions persist along key highway corridors.
Samai Singh Meena, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) for Tambaram, elaborated on the challenges: "In 2025, we registered 4.4 lakh cases for traffic violations, encompassing overspeeding, riding without helmets, drunken driving, and signal jumping. We have installed 120 barricades and deployed 26 motorcycle-mounted traffic marshals to curb speeding, yet some motorists continue to drive recklessly."
Six Highway Corridors Under Scrutiny for Accident Hotspots
Six major highway corridors traverse the Tambaram police limits:
- GST Road
- 200 Feet Radial Road
- Puzhal Bypass
- Vandalur-Kelambakkam Road
- Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR)
- East Coast Road (ECR)
A comprehensive police review has identified OMR as having the highest concentration of accident hotspots. Critical junctions at Sholinganallur, Navalur, Siruseri, and Padur account for numerous fatal incidents.
S Dinesh, a resident of Sholinganallur, observed: "Many crashes occur when two-wheeler riders attempt to overtake buses or trucks, resulting in skidding or falling under the vehicle."
Infrastructure Projects and Night Traffic Exacerbate Risks
Ongoing metro rail and sewer works along several stretches have narrowed carriageways and footpaths due to barricades, further complicating traffic flow. Police also noted that despite marked pedestrian crossings, road users frequently cross at unauthorized points, leading to avoidable collisions.
Officers highlighted increased night traffic as workers from the IT corridor travel for refreshments after shifts, with several recent crashes involving such movement. The ECR stretch ranks second on the list of accident-prone locations, where overspeeding is rampant during nighttime hours.
G Ravichandran, a Panaiyur resident, commented on enforcement gaps: "Previously, automatic vehicle speed detection cameras identified rash driving and offenders were fined through e-challans. This system has now become defunct."
Vandalur-Kelambakkam Road Emerges as New Concern
The Vandalur-Kelambakkam Road corridor has recently entered the list of accident-prone stretches. This road links bus routes serving educational institutions and factories on the outskirts, with hazardous junctions at Melkottaiyur, Pudupakkam signal, Mambakkam signal, and Kandigai bus stop.
Expert Calls for Behavioral Change Alongside Enforcement
Urban planner Suresh Menon emphasized that improving road design and stringent police enforcement alone may not suffice to reduce crashes. "As the city expands and suburban corridors grow, traffic density will inevitably increase. Without a fundamental change in driving behavior, especially among youth, the toll may continue to rise. Many motorists accelerate on open stretches to recover time lost in congestion, making consistent enforcement a key deterrent."
The data underscores the urgent need for targeted interventions in high-risk corridors while sustaining the positive trajectory observed within Chennai city limits. Comprehensive strategies combining infrastructure upgrades, technological solutions, and public awareness campaigns are essential to enhance road safety across the region.
