Coastal Karnataka Legislators Demand Budget Funds for Development Projects

In a significant push for regional progress, people's representatives from the coastal districts of Karnataka have made a strong appeal for the allocation of necessary funds for various development projects in the upcoming state budget. The call was made during the Karnataka Coastal Development Board (KCDB) meeting held on Thursday at the deputy commissioner's office in Mangaluru, under the chairmanship of assembly speaker UT Khader.

Key Infrastructure and Tourism Proposals

Legislators from Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada districts participated actively, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive approach to coastal development. UT Khader highlighted that constructing high-quality roads at elevated levels in the coastal belt could serve a dual purpose: controlling sea erosion and improving traffic systems. He noted that this initiative would also significantly benefit the local tourism sector by enhancing accessibility.

Khader further stressed the requirement for additional funding for the Paschima Vahini Scheme and mentioned that building a jetty at Kotepura in Ullal would help reduce pressure on the Mangaluru port, thereby streamlining maritime operations.

Fisheries and Port Development Initiatives

Minister of fisheries, ports and inland water transport, Mankal S Vaidya, announced a crucial decision to dredge 13 fishing ports across the three coastal districts at an estimated cost of Rs 70 crore. This move aims to improve port functionality and support the fishing industry. Vaidya also suggested the construction of fish markets in various locations to boost local trade and economy.

Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna pointed out a structural issue, noting that the separate functioning of the fisheries and ports departments is hindering the development of fishing ports. He advocated for better coordination to accelerate progress.

Tourism and Regulatory Enhancements

To promote tourism, Moodubidire MLA Umanath Kotian proposed implementing a water metro project and allocating funds for the development of major tourist destinations. This could transform coastal travel and attract more visitors, potentially boosting regional revenue.

Kundapur MLA Kiran Kodgi brought attention to administrative efficiency by proposing the relocation of the coastal regulation zone (CRZ) office from Bengaluru to Mangaluru or Udupi. This change aims to reduce long waiting times for CRZ-related approvals, facilitating quicker project implementations and reducing bureaucratic delays for developers and residents.

Healthcare and Agricultural Support

MLC Dhananjay Sarji emphasized the urgent need for a high-level government hospital in the coastal region dedicated to cancer and heart disease treatment. Such a facility would provide advanced medical care to the public at reasonable rates, addressing critical health infrastructure gaps.

In the agricultural sector, Sullia MLA Bhagirathi Murulya called for a special package for arecanut growers to be announced in the next budget. She also highlighted administrative lapses, noting that despite the formation of Kadaba taluk several years ago, many departments have not yet begun functioning, forcing the public to travel to Puttur for official records.

Addressing Urban Flooding and Policy Uniformity

Mangaluru City North MLA Y Bharat Shetty pointed out a pressing urban issue: the lack of dredging at the confluence of city canals and rivers is causing flooding during the rainy season. This calls for immediate attention to prevent property damage and ensure public safety.

Yashpal Suvarna also advocated for a uniform fisheries policy along the western coast of the country. He explained that different policies in each state, including variations in fishing holidays, are causing difficulties for Karnataka's fishermen, and a standardized approach could alleviate these challenges.

Board's Commitment and Future Steps

KCDB chairman MA Gafoor assured that proposals would be sent to implement major development projects in the coastal region. "The points discussed in today's meeting will be included in the board's action plan, and a request for funding will be made," he added, signaling a proactive approach to securing resources.

The meeting was attended by key officials including deputy commissioner Darshan HV and board's secretary Pradeep D'Souza, among others, underscoring the collaborative effort to drive coastal Karnataka's development forward through strategic budget allocations and project implementations.
