The Congress party has officially declared its support for Shiv Sena (UBT) candidate Ambadas Danve in the upcoming Maharashtra Legislative Council elections, scheduled for 2026. This decision solidifies the alliance within the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition, which also includes the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction).
Strategic Move for MVA Unity
The announcement was made by Maharashtra Congress President Nana Patole, who emphasized the importance of unity among opposition parties to counter the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government. Patole stated, "Ambadas Danve is a seasoned leader and a strong candidate. Our support reflects the collective strength of the MVA."
Ambadas Danve, a prominent leader from the Shiv Sena (UBT) faction, expressed gratitude for the Congress's backing. He said, "This support strengthens our resolve to work together for the people of Maharashtra. The MVA is committed to providing effective governance and upholding democratic values."
Background of the Elections
The Maharashtra Legislative Council elections are crucial for both the ruling and opposition alliances. The MVA, which previously governed the state, aims to regain influence in the upper house. The council elections will be held for multiple seats, and the MVA is fielding joint candidates to maximize their chances.
Political analysts view this move as a test of the MVA's cohesion ahead of future state elections. The alliance has faced challenges in seat-sharing and ideological differences, but this decision signals a temporary truce.
Reactions from Other Parties
The BJP criticized the Congress's decision, accusing the MVA of opportunistic alliances. BJP spokesperson said, "The Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT) are only interested in power, not people's welfare. Their alliance is based on convenience, not principles."
Meanwhile, the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction) has also pledged support to Danve, further consolidating the MVA's position.
Ambadas Danve is expected to file his nomination papers in the coming days. The election is likely to see a multi-cornered contest, with the BJP, MVA, and other smaller parties fielding candidates.
This development underscores the shifting political dynamics in Maharashtra as parties gear up for a series of electoral battles in 2026.
