Gujarat Congress Leader Demands State Government Appeal in 2016 Una Flogging Case Verdict
Gandhinagar: Gujarat Congress working president and Vadgam MLA Jignesh Mevani on Tuesday expressed profound disappointment with the trial court verdict in the 2016 Una flogging case, demanding that the state government file an appeal to protect the rights of Dalits.
Disappointment Over Acquittals and Convictions
Jignesh Mevani stated, "We are saddened and disappointed with the verdict in the case where 35 accused have been acquitted and only five have been found guilty. I demand that the state government appeal against the verdict of the trial court. If the Gujarat state government does not do this, it will mean that it does not care about the rights of Dalits."
He emphasized that the government had previously promised victims would receive government jobs and agricultural land as compensation, but neither has been provided so far, highlighting a failure in delivering justice and support.

The flogging of Dalit youth in 2016 in Una sparked nationwide outrage, with top leaders of opposition parties visiting the area and demanding justice for the atrocity committed against Dalits.
