Congress Veteran T Jeevan Reddy Poised to Join BRS After Four Decades
In a significant political development in Telangana, senior leader T Jeevan Reddy is set to end his 42-year association with the Congress party and join the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) in the coming days. This move marks a major shift in the state's political landscape, with implications for upcoming elections.
KTR's Personal Invitation Seals the Deal
BRS working president KT Rama Rao visited Jeevan Reddy at his residence in Jagtial on Thursday, extending a formal invitation to join the pink party on behalf of BRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao. The meeting, characterized by mutual respect and longstanding personal bonds, culminated in Jeevan Reddy expressing his willingness to work under KCR's leadership.
"Jeevan Reddy responded positively to the invitation and acknowledged his long-standing personal association with KCR," KTR told media representatives after the meeting. "He will meet KCR soon and announce his decision within a couple of days."
The veteran Congress leader had formally resigned from his party on March 25, 2024, setting the stage for this political transition. Jeevan Reddy confirmed that resigning from Congress was an emotional decision, but he expressed genuine happiness at the prospect of joining BRS.
Four Decades of Political History
KTR elaborated on the deep personal connection between KCR and Jeevan Reddy, which spans over four decades of mutual respect and political understanding. He revealed that KCR had actually invited Jeevan Reddy to join BRS even before the 2014 elections, but the Congress leader remained loyal to his party at that time.
"Experienced leaders like Jeevan Reddy are essential for rebuilding Telangana's growth trajectory," KTR emphasized, highlighting the strategic importance of this political acquisition for BRS.
KTR recalled a telling example of KCR's statesmanship that transcended party lines. During KCR's first official tour of Karimnagar district as Chief Minister in 2014, development works requested by Jeevan Reddy—despite being in the opposition—were immediately sanctioned, demonstrating a commitment to governance over partisan politics.
Scathing Critique of Congress Governance
The BRS leader launched a strong attack on the current Congress government, asserting that over the past two and a half years, it has failed in governance and resorted to diversionary politics to hide its inefficiencies.
KTR made serious allegations regarding agricultural policies, stating: "The government defaulted on the Rythu Bandhu scheme three times, accumulating dues of 27,000 crore to farmers, while misleading them in the name of loan waivers." He claimed this mismanagement has generated widespread anger among the farming community.
KTR argued passionately that for farmers and the poor in Telangana to regain stability and happiness, KCR must return as Chief Minister, positioning BRS as the solution to current governance failures.
Jeevan Reddy's Perspective on the Transition
Former minister Jeevan Reddy expressed gratitude to KTR for the personal visit and invitation extended on KCR's behalf. He described enduring what he called "humiliation" over the past 20 months with patience, suggesting growing dissatisfaction within Congress ranks.
"Having seen many governments, I believe the present government was moving in a regressive direction," Jeevan Reddy stated, explaining his decision to leave Congress after more than four decades.
The senior leader emphasized that his decision was based on public opinion and expressed genuine enthusiasm for the opportunity to work under KCR's leadership in BRS. His comments suggest a calculated political move rather than a spontaneous decision, reflecting broader discontent with the current administration's direction.
This political realignment comes at a crucial time for Telangana politics, with BRS strategically strengthening its ranks with experienced leaders ahead of potential electoral challenges. The defection of a Congress veteran of Jeevan Reddy's stature represents both a symbolic and practical blow to the ruling party while bolstering BRS's claim to experienced leadership.
