Congress's Unwavering Demand for Sriperumbudur Seat in Tamil Nadu Elections
In the lead-up to any election, the Congress party consistently initiates its seat-sharing negotiations with a firm precondition: the Sriperumbudur constituency must be allocated to the party. This demand is rooted in deep emotional and historical significance, as articulated by Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K Selvaperunthagai. "That's where the temple of our leader is," he emphasizes, referring to the memorial dedicated to the late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, whose assassination occurred in Sriperumbudur in 1991, approximately 40 kilometers from Chennai.
A Legacy of Electoral Battles and Victories
Even prior to this tragic event, Sriperumbudur had been a preferred seat for Congress candidates. Following Rajiv Gandhi's death, the constituency gained an even warmer place in the hearts of the party's rank and file. Since 1991, Congress has contested this reserved segment seven times, securing victory in four of those elections. Selvaperunthagai himself won the seat in 2021 and is now seeking reelection from here, aiming to continue this legacy.
Voter Discontent and Accessibility Issues
Despite the strong emotional connection, the current electoral contest appears challenging for Congress. Voters in the constituency have voiced complaints about Selvaperunthagai's rare appearances, particularly after he assumed the role of TNCC president in 2024. During visits by reporters, public sentiment against him was palpable in certain areas. For instance, on December 30 last year, villagers in Kottur questioned his absence during a visit, highlighting a broader issue of accessibility.
Sarangan G, a resident of Sarapancheri village, stated, "He is not easily accessible. We could see him more on TV than in the constituency." This sentiment contrasts sharply with the perception of AIADMK candidate K Palani, a former MLA from the area who has maintained a visible presence since 2016. A native of Kundrathur in Sriperumbudur, Palani leverages his grassroots connections and points to infrastructure projects completed during the AIADMK regime before 2021.
Campaign Challenges and Political Dynamics
During his campaign, Selvaperunthagai has been compelled to dedicate significant time explaining his inability to visit the constituency frequently. "People expect their MLA to visit every village, but that is not possible. There are local bodies to take care of their basic needs while an MLA has other tasks. I am explaining this to the people wherever I go. They are slowly understanding," he remarked. This defense underscores the balancing act he faces in managing both local and party responsibilities.
Adding to the complexity, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has entered the fray, banking on the popularity of actor Vijay. TVK has fielded K Thennarasu as its candidate, but both Congress and AIADMK dismiss him as a political novice unlikely to gain substantial support. This multi-cornered contest intensifies the stakes in Sriperumbudur, making it a critical battleground in the upcoming elections.
The electoral dynamics in Sriperumbudur reflect a broader narrative of political legacy clashing with contemporary voter expectations. While Congress holds onto its emotional ties to the constituency, the outcome may hinge on addressing voter concerns over representation and accessibility.
