In a shocking incident of violence, Uttam Jinappa Mohite, the president of the Dalit Mahasangh (Mohite Group), was brutally murdered outside his residence in Sangli, Maharashtra. The attack, which involved a group of armed men, occurred late Tuesday night following a dispute that erupted during Mohite's birthday celebrations.
The Fatal Celebration
The tragic events unfolded on Tuesday evening. Uttam Mohite, 37, was celebrating his birthday on a stage set up near his home at Garpir Chowk in Sangli. According to police investigations, a minor argument broke out between Mohite and another individual, identified as Ganesh More, over the seemingly trivial matter of having food at the event.
The quarrel was initially defused when family members intervened, and the situation appeared to be under control. However, the calm was shattered around midnight when Ganesh More returned with several accomplices, all armed with sharp weapons.
A Brutal and Chaotic Attack
The assailants launched a vicious assault on Mohite while he was still on the stage. In a desperate attempt to save his life, Mohite ran towards his house. The armed men, however, chased him down and attacked him repeatedly with their weapons, leaving him lying in a pool of blood.
His nephew, Yogesh Mohite, bravely intervened to resist the attackers but was also injured in the process. The chaos of the attack took an unexpected turn when one of the assailants, 21-year-old Shahrukh Rafiq Shaikh, was mistakenly stabbed by one of his own associates. He was left critically injured.
A police team rushed to the scene and transported both Uttam Mohite and Shahrukh Shaikh to a nearby hospital. Tragically, Mohite was declared dead on arrival. Shahrukh Shaikh fought for his life but succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday morning, turning the murder into a double homicide.
Police Investigation and Aftermath
Inspector Arun Sugaokar of the Sangli City Police Station confirmed that a case has been registered against eight individuals. Four suspects have already been arrested, and a manhunt is underway to apprehend the remaining accused.
The police are heavily relying on CCTV footage from cameras installed near the crime scene, a video from which has gone viral on social media. The footage is being meticulously examined to identify all the men involved in the violent episode.
Further investigation has revealed that both the deceased had prior criminal records. Uttam Mohite was previously booked in nine cases, while Shahrukh Shaikh was a known history-sheeter with five criminal cases against him in Sangli. The police continue to probe the deeper motives and connections behind this brutal crime.
