Dharamsala Municipal Corporation to Relocate Kachehri Market and Create Dedicated Vending Zones
In a significant move to alleviate chronic traffic congestion and streamline street vending activities, the Dharamsala Municipal Corporation (MC) has announced plans to relocate the Kachehri vegetable market and establish dedicated vending zones. This initiative targets key urban areas, including the heavily congested Kachehri Chowk and the vicinity of the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) International Cricket Stadium.
Relocation of Kachehri Vegetable Market
The Kachehri Chowk, a major traffic bottleneck in Dharamsala, has long been plagued by unregulated vending and illegal parking, severely hindering pedestrian movement and vehicle flow. To address this, the MC will shift the existing vegetable market to a designated site near the Industry Department office. Approximately 20 shops will be constructed at this new location to accommodate vendors in a more organized manner, ensuring better accessibility and reduced congestion.
This decision follows extensive consultations with vendors, who initially opposed the relocation due to concerns over reduced footfall and business viability. After several rounds of discussions, a consensus has been reached, allowing the MC to proceed with construction in a phased manner. Municipal Commissioner Zaffar Iqbal emphasized that the goal is not displacement but organized rehabilitation, balancing urban order with economic needs.
New Vending Zones Near HPCA Stadium
In addition to the Kachehri market relocation, roadside vendors operating in front of the HPCA International Cricket Stadium will be moved to a newly identified site near a government school. The civic body plans to develop this area as a planned vending zone equipped with basic amenities, enabling vendors to continue their livelihoods without disrupting traffic flow. This move is part of a broader effort to regulate vending and enhance urban aesthetics in Dharamsala.
Officials noted that earlier attempts to identify alternative sites closer to Kachehri Chowk faced resistance from vendors, delaying the process. However, the current proposal reflects a more practical and mutually agreed solution, addressing concerns over surrounding conditions and business sustainability.
Broader Urban Management Initiatives
The MC has already developed three markets to rehabilitate vendors at McLeodganj, Nehru Park near the inter-state bus terminus, and Charan, showcasing ongoing efforts to improve urban management. Once the Kachehri market relocation is implemented, it is expected to significantly ease congestion at the chowk. The administration is also considering introducing one-way traffic in the area to further enhance mobility and public access.
This initiative marks a proactive step towards planned urban management in Dharamsala, aiming to ensure smoother traffic flow, better public access, and a more organized cityscape without compromising the livelihoods of street vendors. By creating dedicated vending zones, the MC seeks to foster a harmonious balance between economic activities and urban order, contributing to the city's development as a smart and sustainable urban center.
