DMK-Congress Alliance Finalizes Seat-Sharing Agreement After Weeks of Negotiations
The political landscape in Tamil Nadu witnessed a significant development as the DMK-Congress alliance officially announced a seat-sharing agreement on Wednesday, effectively ending weeks of uncertainty and speculation. The deal, signed at the DMK headquarters in Chennai, allocates 28 assembly seats to the Congress party along with a coveted Rajya Sabha berth.
Key Figures and Negotiation Dynamics
The agreement was formally inked by Chief Minister M K Stalin and Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president K Selvaperunthagai. The signing ceremony was attended by prominent leaders including AICC member Girish Chodankar and senior DMK leader Kanimozhi, who played a pivotal role in breaking the deadlock through late-night telephone calls and back-channel discussions.
Selvaperunthagai expressed satisfaction with the outcome, stating to reporters at Anna Arivalayam, "We are satisfied. The AICC will announce our Rajya Sabha candidate." The negotiations had been characterized by hard bargaining, with Congress initially demanding 41 seats while DMK offered only 25, mirroring their 2021 arrangement.
Compromise and Strategic Considerations
After multiple rounds of intense discussions, including intervention by former Union minister P Chidambaram, DMK gradually increased its offer to 27 seats on Tuesday before settling at 28. Concurrently, Congress negotiators scaled down their demands from 35 to 30 seats.
Congress sources revealed that while Rahul Gandhi advocated for a larger seat allocation, Sonia Gandhi ultimately persuaded him to accept 28 seats. This decision was influenced by the party's strategic need to maintain its alliance with DMK, which serves as a crucial national-level supporter against the ruling BJP. Additionally, Congress has temporarily set aside its demand for power-sharing arrangements.
Mutual Benefits and Electoral Calculations
The softening of positions became inevitable as both parties recognized the strategic importance of preserving their alliance. Congress's substantial vote share, particularly in minority-dominated constituencies, has historically contributed to the DMK front's electoral victories. With actor Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) expected to challenge for minority votes, retaining Congress support was deemed essential for Stalin's political prospects.
For Congress, the alliance with DMK holds significance beyond Tamil Nadu, providing national-level leverage against the BJP. Although some Congress leaders explored potential alignment with TVK, concerns persisted that even a higher number of seats might not translate into more MLAs. Aligning with DMK offered a higher probability of electoral success.
Future Prospects and Additional Negotiations
Chodankar confirmed that discussions regarding Puducherry seat sharing would commence on Thursday, indicating ongoing collaboration between the two parties.
