Kannur: Former Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader T K Govindan on Tuesday issued a stark warning, stating that the party must be prepared to rectify its errors by learning from its poor performance in the recent assembly elections. Govindan, who defeated CPM's P K Shyamala in the communist stronghold of Taliparamba, asserted that the CPM in Kerala would face the same fate as it did in West Bengal if it fails to correct its mistakes.
Govindan's Call for Internal Correction
Govindan emphasized that his intention was to correct the CPM from within, not to cause damage. He claimed that his criticism of the weakening of inner-party democracy within the CPM received widespread support from both party members and the public. According to him, even CPM cadres, including local committee members, cast their votes for him, reflecting growing discontent within the party ranks.
Unprecedented Challenge in Dharmadom
Govindan described the contest in Dharmadom, the constituency of outgoing Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, as unprecedented. He stated that he did not wish for Vijayan to lose the election but never expected the chief minister to face such a significant electoral challenge in a CPM stronghold. Govindan called on the party to examine this development in detail and to openly discuss the anti-Vijayan sentiments among the people. He stressed that both the CPM state secretary and the chief minister should be ready to make necessary changes.
Govindan's remarks come amid the ongoing election results for 2026, with live updates, winner lists, constituency-wise results, party-wise trends, and full coverage for Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Kerala, Assam, and Puducherry elections available on the Times of India. He also noted that the party's leadership must introspect and adapt to avoid further electoral setbacks.
