National Conference president Farooq Abdullah has expressed disappointment over the lack of support from within the opposition INDIA bloc regarding the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir's statehood. Addressing a press conference in Srinagar, Abdullah stated that while the alliance was formed to challenge the BJP, key allies like the Congress have not shown the necessary commitment to the statehood cause.
Abdullah's Concerns
Abdullah remarked that the INDIA bloc, which includes several regional parties, has failed to prioritize the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir's special status and statehood. He noted that the Congress party, in particular, has been ambiguous in its stance. "We need a united front to press for our demands, but unfortunately, some partners are not on the same page," he said.
Political Context
The comments come amid ongoing debates about the future of Jammu and Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019. The National Conference has consistently demanded the restoration of statehood, which was downgraded to a Union Territory. Abdullah emphasized that his party would continue to fight for the rights of the people, regardless of the alliance's support.
- Abdullah criticized the delay in the restoration process.
- He called for a clear timeline from the central government.
- He urged the INDIA bloc to adopt a stronger stance on the issue.
When asked about the possibility of going solo in future elections, Abdullah did not rule it out, stating that his party's primary loyalty is to the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
