The Mohali police have taken into custody two individuals, including a former youth leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal, following a late-night episode of public disorder and alleged assault on police personnel at a local market. The incident, which underscores concerns over rowdy behavior in public spaces, led to the arrest of Malkiat Singh Khalsa and Simarjeet Singh, while a third associate managed to flee the scene.

Chaotic Scene at Phase 3B2 Market

The trouble began late on Friday night in the parking area of the Phase 3B2 market. According to police reports, three youths, visibly under the influence of alcohol, were creating a nuisance. They were driving a Thar SUV recklessly within the market premises while blaring loud music, disturbing the peace of the area.

Police Control Room (PCR) staff present at the location initially intervened, instructing the group to cease their disruptive activities and leave the market area. The youths complied temporarily and drove away. However, they returned shortly and resumed their erratic driving in the parking lot, prompting further police action.

Confrontation and Arrest of Accused

In the presence of Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Gurmeet Singh, the police proceeded to issue a challan (traffic penalty) against the vehicle. This official action allegedly incited the intoxicated individuals. The accused then stepped out of their SUV and confronted the officers on duty.

The police state that the accused pushed the personnel, verbally abused them, and even tore their uniforms during the physical altercation. Following this scuffle, PCR official Gurneb Singh and constable Arshdeep Singh alerted the police station. Responding swiftly, Station House Officer (SHO) Rupinder Singh arrived at the spot with a team and apprehended Malkiat Singh Khalsa and Simarjeet Singh. Their third accomplice escaped in the ensuing commotion.

Legal Action and Ongoing Investigation

SHO Rupinder Singh of the Matour police station confirmed that both arrested individuals were medically examined. The test results confirmed that they were intoxicated at the time of the incident. A formal case has been registered against the duo.

The charges have been filed under multiple sections of the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), specifically sections 132, 221, 296, 281, and 115(2). Additionally, sections 184 and 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act have been invoked. Simarjeet Singh is a resident of Sector 126 in Mundi Kharar, while Malkiat Singh Khalsa resides in Phase 3B2 itself.

Malkiat Singh Khalsa is identified as a former general secretary of the Youth Akali Dal. The police have emphasized that search operations are ongoing to trace and arrest the third accused who is currently absconding. SHO Rupinder Singh issued a stern warning, stating that anyone involved in hooliganism, rowdy behavior, or disturbing the atmosphere in market areas will face strict legal consequences.
