Goa State Budget Unveils Major Police Modernization and Infrastructure Plan
The Government of Goa has announced a comprehensive budgetary package aimed at significantly upgrading the state's police force and correctional facilities. The financial provisions, presented by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, focus on enhancing mobility, infrastructure, and human resources within the law enforcement sector.
Substantial Investment in Police Mobility and Infrastructure
A key highlight of the budget is the allocation of Rs 24 crore for the procurement of 222 different types of vehicles for the Goa police. This substantial investment is designed to improve the operational efficiency and response capabilities of the force across various terrains and requirements.
In a major infrastructure move, Chief Minister Sawant announced a provision of Rs 45 crore to commence construction work on the new police headquarters building in Panaji. This project aims to provide a modern, centralized command center for the state's police administration.
Correctional Facility Expansion and Vigilance Enhancement
The budget also includes over Rs 18 crore to initiate the establishment of a semi-open prison at the Colvale Central Jail. This facility is intended to support rehabilitation efforts for eligible inmates through a less restrictive environment.
Additionally, the government plans to set up a preventive vigilance cell to strengthen internal monitoring and integrity mechanisms within the police department.
Focus on Human Resources and Cybercrime Capabilities
Chief Minister Sawant emphasized improvements in basic facilities for human resources in the police department, including enhancements at the Valpoi Police Training Institute. These upgrades are expected to provide better training infrastructure and living conditions for personnel.
Recognizing the growing threat of digital crimes, the budget outlines plans to strengthen cybercrime units and provide special training to police personnel in this critical area. This initiative aims to equip the force with advanced skills to combat online fraud, hacking, and other cyber offenses effectively.
Furthermore, the state announced a provision of Rs 15 crore specifically for home and law and order purposes, underscoring the government's commitment to maintaining public safety and security across Goa.
