Panaji: Ruing the poor entrepreneurial mindset among Goans, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant stated that the lack of initiative has allowed people from other states to step in and “take over” traditional occupations of the state. Drawing a parallel between Goans who move to the Gulf region for work, Sawant said workers from North Indian states are coming to Goa to fill the vacuum.
Outsiders Filling the Gap
“I am sorry to say this, but it is outsiders who are coming here and doing business. Our traditional occupations have been taken over by people who have come here from other states,” said Sawant while speaking at a Prime Minister's Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) in Sanquelim. He added, “We need plumbing contractors, electrical contractors, even building workers. People from other states have made Goa their Dubai.”
Call for Entrepreneurship
Sawant urged local youth and graduates to venture into entrepreneurship instead of waiting for high-paying jobs. “I earnestly request Goans. Don’t think of a business as small or inferior, because we are here to support you in your business. Legal support, trade marketing, financial support, technology support. We will give it to you,” said Sawant.
Government Support for Startups
The Chief Minister emphasized that the government is ready to provide comprehensive support to aspiring entrepreneurs, including legal, trade marketing, financial, and technology assistance. He encouraged Goans to take advantage of these resources and contribute to the state’s economic growth by starting their own ventures.
