Goa IRBn Constable Dies in Holi Ritual Tree Trunk Accident

Tragic Accident During Traditional Holi Ritual Claims Life of IRBn Constable in Goa

In a devastating incident that occurred on Monday night, a 42-year-old head constable of the Indian Reserve Battalion (IRBn) lost his life after a tree trunk, which is venerated as part of Holi celebrations in Goa, collapsed on him. The tragedy unfolded in Mencurem village, located within the Bicholim taluka of North Goa.

Details of the Fatal Incident

According to police reports, the villagers had gathered as per their long-standing tradition on a full moon night to install the sacred tree trunk. During the process, the trunk suddenly slipped and fell directly onto Pranav Mishal, who was attached to the Ribandar camp. Mishal, who had joined the IRBn in 2006, was immediately rushed to the North Goa district hospital in Mapusa. However, due to his unstable condition, he was subsequently transferred to the Goa Medical College (GMC) for advanced medical care.

Despite all efforts, Mishal succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday while undergoing treatment. The Bicholim police initially registered the case as an accident, but later reclassified it as an unnatural death. Doctors at GMC conducted a post-mortem examination, after which the body was handed over to his family for the final rites.

The Cultural Significance of the Holi Ritual

This tragic event highlights a unique cultural practice observed in Goa during the Holi festival. As per tradition, villagers select a tall and straight tree trunk, which is carefully cut. The following day, the trunk is ceremoniously transported to the village accompanied by the rhythmic beats of the dhol, a traditional folk drum.

Using ropes, sticks, and poles, the community collaboratively erects the tree trunk in front of the main temple of the village. Once installed, the trunk is worshipped as part of the Holi festivities, symbolizing community unity and spiritual reverence. This year, however, the ritual took a sorrowful turn with the accidental death of Constable Mishal.

Police Investigation and Community Impact

The police are thoroughly investigating the circumstances that led to the tree trunk's collapse. Authorities have emphasized the need for safety measures during such traditional events to prevent similar accidents in the future. The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, casting a shadow over the otherwise joyous Holi celebrations.

Pranav Mishal's untimely demise is a stark reminder of the risks associated with large-scale communal activities, even those deeply rooted in cultural heritage. His colleagues in the IRBn and the villagers of Mencurem are mourning the loss of a dedicated officer and community member.
