A tragic incident occurred on Friday morning in Chennai's Narayanapuram lake in Pallikaranai, where a 60-year-old man and his teenage grandson drowned. The deceased were identified as Perumal, 60, a resident of Sengeni Amman Koil Street, Pallikaranai, and his grandson Bharath, 15, a Class X student.
According to police reports, the boys had come to stay with their grandfather as schools had recently closed for summer vacation. On Friday morning, due to soaring temperatures, Perumal took them to the nearby Narayanapuram lake for a bath. Another grandson, Dinesh, 14, a Class IX student, accompanied them but did not enter the water.
Dinesh sat on the bank while Perumal and Bharath got into the lake. Bharath ventured into a deeper section of the water body and began struggling to stay afloat. Seeing this, Perumal rushed to rescue him, but both drowned. Dinesh, who witnessed the incident from the shore, raised an alarm, alerting nearby locals to attempt a rescue. Despite their efforts, they were unable to save the duo.
Personnel from the Medavakkam fire and rescue services department arrived at the spot and launched a search operation. The bodies were recovered on Friday afternoon. The Pallikaranai police sent the bodies to Tambaram GH for postmortem examination.
