NEW DELHI: ADV Shanimol Osman of the Indian National Congress (INC) has emerged victorious in the Aroora Assembly constituency, securing 74,469 votes. Her primary rival, Daleema of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), lost the high-stakes battle by a margin of 9,324 votes. The election results for 2026 have been announced, with the Aroora seat being one of the key constituencies in Kerala.
Voter Demographics and Turnout
A total of 189,947 registered voters were on the electoral rolls for the 2026 Assembly election in the Aroora constituency. Among them, 93,167 were male, 96,780 were female, and none belonged to the third gender. The voter turnout reflected a competitive contest, with exit polls indicating a tight race between the incumbent Left Democratic Front (LDF) government, which sought a third consecutive term, and the United Democratic Front (UDF).
Constituency Profile
Aroora Assembly constituency, numbered 102, is located in the Alappuzha district of Kerala and falls under the Alappuzha parliamentary constituency. Established in 1957 and redefined in the 2008 delimitation, it encompasses the Aroora Municipality, panchayats such as Aryad and Cherthala, and coastal villages along the Vembanad backwaters. The constituency has around 200,000 electors and is a general seat. The local economy thrives on fishing communities, coir industries, prawn farming, salt production, and seafood trade, blending maritime livelihoods with semi-urban growth amid canals and lagoons near Kochi.
Historical Election Trends
The Communist Party of India (Marxist), part of the LDF, has dominated this seat since 2016, with A.M. Ariff serving as the current MLA. In the 2021 election, Ariff won decisively with 67,493 votes (48.85 per cent of the vote), defeating Congress's Dean Kuriakose, who secured 60,653 votes. The victory margin was 6,840 votes (4.95 per cent), with a voter turnout of 78.24 per cent. This result reversed the UDF's hold on the seat from 2011 and extended the LDF's base among labor and fisherfolk communities, following a narrow 1,411-vote edge in 2016. The CPI(M)'s organizational strength has consistently outpaced UDF surges, while the BJP has maintained a vote share of 6 to 8 per cent.
Key Issues in the Constituency
Several key issues have shaped the electoral landscape in Aroora. Coastal erosion threatens homes and farms, while frequent flooding from backwaters and poor drainage exacerbates the problem. Fish stock depletion, driven by overfishing and pollution, has impacted local livelihoods. Fisher welfare demands, including better harbors and subsidies, remain prominent. Unemployment in the declining coir sector, waste management overload, and road-waterlogging woes are also pressing concerns. Additionally, there are calls for seafood processing units, mangrove restoration, and climate-resilient infrastructure. These maritime challenges have sustained the LDF's edge in this vibrant coastal stronghold.
Broader Election Context
The 2026 Assembly elections in Kerala are part of a larger electoral landscape that includes results from Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Assam, and Puducherry. In Tamil Nadu, Vijay's TVK party has emerged as a formidable force, pushing the DMK and AIADMK to the margins. In West Bengal, the BJP is projected to oust Mamata Banerjee's government, while in Assam, the BJP is expected to retain power. The UDF has won in Kerala, with the Congress and its allies securing a majority. The results reflect a dynamic political shift across these states.
