A head constable posted in the call detail record (CDR) cell of Sriganganagar police was suspended on Wednesday for allegedly assisting Punjab-based smugglers linked to a heroin consignment that was dropped by Pakistani drones.
Details of the Accused
Police identified the accused as Mangat Ram, a resident of Chunawadh. He was part of several major anti-smuggling operations along the India-Pakistan border and was considered an expert in cybercrime and drone smuggling investigations.
The Heroin Recovery Case
The case relates to the recovery of 10.830 kg of heroin, valued at nearly Rs 50 crore, from fields under the Rawla police station area on March 26. Investigators alleged that Mangat Ram misled police teams by supplying incorrect technical inputs and was in contact with one of the arrested smugglers. Five accused were earlier arrested in the case.
This incident highlights the vulnerabilities within law enforcement when dealing with cross-border smuggling operations. The suspended constable's role in providing false information has raised concerns about the integrity of investigations into drone-dropped narcotics.
Authorities are now conducting a thorough probe to determine the extent of Mangat Ram's involvement and whether any other officers were complicit in the smuggling network. The case remains under investigation, with further arrests expected.
