The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has formally staked its claim to both Rajya Sabha seats from the state, a move that has intensified the simmering rift within the ruling India Bloc coalition. The development comes as a surprise to many political observers, as the coalition partners had earlier hinted at a possible seat-sharing arrangement.
JMM's Bold Move
On June 6, 2026, the JMM submitted its official claim to the Election Commission, asserting its right to both Rajya Sabha seats that will fall vacant in the coming months. The party argues that its numerical strength in the state assembly justifies this demand. With 30 MLAs in the 81-seat house, the JMM is the single largest party in the ruling coalition.
However, the claim has not gone down well with the Congress, which has 18 MLAs, and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), which has 7 MLAs. Both parties are demanding a share of the seats, citing their contributions to the coalition's majority.
Coalition Tensions Escalate
The India Bloc, a coalition of like-minded parties formed to counter the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has been facing internal discord in several states. In Jharkhand, the JMM's aggressive posture has raised concerns about the stability of the government. Chief Minister Hemant Soren, who leads the JMM, has remained tight-lipped about the issue, but party insiders suggest that the leadership is determined to secure both seats.
Political analysts believe that the JMM's move is a strategic one, aimed at consolidating its position within the coalition and signaling its dominance. However, it could also lead to a breakdown of trust among allies, potentially weakening the coalition ahead of the next assembly elections.
Reactions from Allies
Congress state president Rajesh Thakur expressed disappointment over the JMM's unilateral decision. "We are partners in the government, and such decisions should be taken collectively. The Congress will not accept any arrangement that sidelines its legitimate claim," he said.
RJD leader Shailesh Kumar echoed similar sentiments, warning that the coalition's future could be at stake if the JMM does not reconsider its stance. "We have always stood by the JMM, but this is not the way to treat allies. We expect a fair distribution of seats," he added.
Meanwhile, the BJP has seized the opportunity to criticize the coalition, calling it a "house of cards." State BJP president Babulal Marandi said, "The internal bickering within the India Bloc shows their lack of unity and vision. The people of Jharkhand deserve a stable government, not a coalition that is constantly at war with itself."
What Lies Ahead
The Election Commission is expected to announce the schedule for the Rajya Sabha elections shortly. The JMM's claim will likely be challenged by its allies, and a compromise may be reached through negotiations. However, if the deadlock continues, it could lead to a snap election or a realignment of political forces in the state.
The situation in Jharkhand is being closely watched by national parties, as it could have implications for the broader opposition unity against the BJP. For now, the India Bloc's solidarity is under severe test, and the outcome of this tussle will determine the coalition's trajectory in the state.
