Kashmir Valley Implements Two-Day Educational Shutdown Amid Heightened Security

Authorities in the Kashmir Valley have mandated the closure of all educational institutions for two days, effective Monday, as part of stringent measures to uphold law and order. This decision follows recent US-Israeli airstrikes on Iran, with officials citing the need to prevent potential exploitation of public sentiment by miscreants and anti-national elements.

Comprehensive Closure Across the Valley

Schools, colleges, and universities across all ten districts of the Valley will remain shut, disrupting academic activities. Kashmir University has postponed exams scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, impacting students who were set to resume classes from Class 9 to 12 after the nearly three-month-long winter recess.

Enhanced Security Deployment in Sensitive Areas

Police and security forces have been deployed in significant numbers across Srinagar, with barricades erected in key locations such as Lal Chowk, the city centre. This area witnessed thousands gathering on Sunday to protest the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in the US-Israeli airstrikes. Authorities are enforcing stricter measures in old city and uptown areas, which are home to a sizable Shia Muslim population.

Vehicular movement between areas has been restricted, and inter-district public transport in the Valley has been suspended. While traffic on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway continues, it operates with fewer private vehicles, reflecting the heightened security environment.

Administrative Monitoring and Appeals for Calm

The Ladakh administration is closely monitoring the situation, particularly in Kargil district, which has a predominantly Shia Muslim population. In a proactive move, Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha chaired a security review meeting on Sunday, with DGP Nalin Prabhat present in Srinagar to oversee security arrangements.

In a message on X, Lt. Governor Sinha stated, “Chaired a meeting to review the security situation across J&K UT. Called upon all communities to stay peaceful and calm. I salute the unwavering, synchronized resolve of our Police and security forces upholding law and order.”

Political Leadership Expresses Concern

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has voiced concern over the developments in Iran, appealing for calm and peace. He emphasized, “I appeal to all communities to remain calm, uphold peace, and avoid any actions that could lead to tension or unrest. We must also ensure that those who are mourning in Jammu and Kashmir are allowed to grieve peacefully. The police and administration should exercise utmost restraint and refrain from using force or restrictive measures.”

Abdullah added that the Government of Jammu & Kashmir is coordinating with the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, to ensure the safety of J&K residents, including students currently in Iran. Officials note that approximately 1,200 students from Jammu and Kashmir are studying in Iran, prompting additional precautionary measures.
