Kochi Factory Fire: Joint Safety Inspection Delayed Despite District Order
More than a week has passed since a tragic fire incident at the Cee Jee Lubricants company in Edayar, Kochi, resulted in the death of a migrant worker and left three others injured. In response, the district administration directed a comprehensive joint inspection of industrial units in Ernakulam, involving the fire force, industries department, and boilers and factories department. However, this critical safety measure has yet to commence, raising concerns about industrial safety protocols in the region.
District Meeting Mandates Inspection Within 10 Days
The directive was issued during a meeting convened by District Collector G Priyanka on March 27, which explicitly called for the inspection to be completed within a 10-day timeframe. Despite this clear instruction, officials from the boilers and factories department have reported that they have not received any official intimation regarding the joint inspection. This lack of communication has stalled the process, leaving industrial units unchecked in the aftermath of the fatal incident.
Reasons Cited for the Delay
An officer from the department explained the delay, stating, "There are approximately 380 units in the Edayar industrial area alone. We can only initiate the joint inspection after the Vishu festival, as officials will be on leave until then. Additionally, we are still awaiting formal notification from the district administration." This highlights logistical challenges and administrative gaps that are impeding timely safety assessments.
Background of the Fire Incident
The fire occurred on March 25 in a thermal fluid heater at the Cee Jee Lubricants factory. Investigations revealed that a safety lapse on the part of the company was the primary cause of the blaze. Following the incident, the boilers and factories department ordered the factory to shut down. It can only resume operations after complying with the recommendations outlined in the final inquiry report submitted to the department's headquarters.
The delay in the joint inspection underscores broader issues in industrial safety enforcement and inter-departmental coordination. As authorities await the end of the Vishu festival holidays, the urgency of preventing similar tragedies remains a pressing concern for workers and residents in Ernakulam.
