Protest in Kokrajhar Over Delayed Road Construction to Temple
Kokrajhar Road Protest Over 3-Year Delay

Dhubri: People of Parbatjhara sub-division in Kokrajhar district held a protest on Wednesday at Khoraghat against the prolonged delay in the construction of a 4.84km road from NH-17 to the Shree Shree Maa Mahamaya Snan ghat temple, which has been pending for over three years.

Allegations Against Contractor

Protesters alleged that the work was allotted to M/S Kusember Construction of Guwahati in 2023 with a sanctioned amount of Rs 5.60 crore. The company was supposed to start the work on March 3, 2024, but has not yet begun.

Residents' Grievances

Chandan Kumar Barman, former leader of the All Koch Rajbongshi Students’ Union (Akrasu), who led the protest, told TOI that the area is highly populous with a mixed community. He stated that there is no other road except this one, which has been in a dilapidated condition for many years, making it beyond negotiable.

“Moreover, pilgrims and devotees face a lot of inconveniences while visiting the temple, as this road leads to the highly revered Shree Shree Maa Mahamaya Snanghat temple. Besides them, daily commuters and residents also face the same situation, especially during the rainy season,” Barman alleged with deep resentment.

Warning of Further Action

Barman warned that if the work does not start within a week, residents of the area would stage a sit-in strike at Khoraghat and block NH-17 soon.
