Kolkata: Writers' Buildings and several other West Bengal government offices in Kolkata will turn orange after dusk on Saturday to mark the inaugural day of the first-ever BJP government in the state. The illumination trials were conducted on Friday evening.
Illumination Details
Sources indicated that the Greco-Roman facade of Writers' Buildings, which will once again serve as the state secretariat after its restoration and renovation is completed, will be adorned with thousands of orange rice bulbs. Several other buildings, including the Assembly House, Kolkata Collectorate, and Akashvani Bhavan, will similarly be illuminated in orange hues starting from around 5:30 pm.
Historical Context
Many state government buildings received a blue-and-white makeover after Mamata Banerjee assumed office in 2011. However, a few heritage buildings, such as Writers' Buildings (the state secretariat until 2013) and the Kolkata Collectorate, retained their original red and off-white shades.
Preparations for New Chief Minister
Inside Writers' Buildings, where the new Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari is expected to arrive in the afternoon after taking oath at Brigade Parade Ground and then visiting Raj Bhavan to complete formalities, work was underway at a furious pace to set up a makeshift Chief Minister's Office (CMO) for his symbolic visit. Adhikari will thereafter function from the CM's office at the Vidhan Sabha before returning to Writers' Buildings once the office work is completed.
