Kolkata Municipal Corporation Takes Stern Action Against Parking Overcharging
The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has initiated a decisive crackdown on parking irregularities in the city, with a particular focus on the Chowringhee area. On Monday, the civic body resolved to issue a show-cause notice to the agency responsible for managing the car parking lot on JL Nehru Road. This action comes in response to serious allegations of overcharging motorists and blatant disregard for established parking regulations.
Immediate Response to Public Outcry
The decision was prompted by a detailed report published by The Times of India on Monday, which vividly documented the growing distress among motorists facing what many describe as extortionate practices by certain parking attendants. In a swift and coordinated response, the KMC has not only targeted the specific agency but has also mobilized its car parking department inspectors to conduct surprise inspections throughout the Chowringhee vicinity and surrounding neighborhoods.
Debasis Kumar, the member of the mayor-in-council who oversees the KMC car parking department, issued a stern warning. "The activities being carried out under the guise of operating parking facilities in Chowringhee and various other parts of Kolkata are completely illegal. We will not tolerate such misconduct. I have directed my department officials to serve a show-cause notice and demand a comprehensive explanation from the errant agency. Should their response prove unsatisfactory, we may have no choice but to blacklist them," Kumar stated emphatically.
Comprehensive Checks and Police Collaboration
According to a senior KMC official, the inspection drive will encompass multiple facets of parking operations. Authorities will verify whether attendants are adhering to the official parking fee of Rs 50 per hour and ensure that all personnel are carrying valid photo identification cards. This multi-pronged approach aims to root out systemic abuses and restore order to the city's parking infrastructure.
Simultaneously, the Kolkata Police's south traffic guard launched its own intensive crackdown against illegal parking in the Grand Arcade area and its environs. By Monday evening, police had penalized 59 motorists for parking violations. Over the past week, enforcement efforts have resulted in fines being imposed on a staggering 1,158 vehicles, averaging approximately 165 cases per day. Police noted that the majority of these fines were issued between Friday and Sunday, highlighting peak periods of non-compliance.
Challenges and Ongoing Complaints
While the enforcement drive has proven particularly effective on JL Nehru Road, police officials acknowledged that clearing adjacent roads of illegal parking will require sustained effort over an extended period. An official from the KMC mentioned that the corporation has yet to make a final decision regarding potential adjustments to parking fees. However, the department continues to be inundated with complaints from residents across Kolkata, who accuse parking attendants of exploiting motorists through excessive charges and, in some cases, outright misbehavior.
Several parking agencies have been allegedly misleading motorists by falsely claiming that the KMC has increased the base parking fee from Rs 10 to Rs 20 per hour, thereby justifying their inflated charges. This deceptive practice has exacerbated the financial burden on drivers and undermined public trust in the city's parking management system.
