LDF Leaders Stage Parallel Inauguration and Protest on NH 66 Section
In a significant political demonstration, LDF leaders in Kerala held a parallel inauguration of the Thalappady-Chengala section of National Highway 66 on Wednesday. This action was accompanied by a symbolic protest roadshow on the Ramanattukara-Vengalam stretch, directly challenging the exclusion of PWD minister P A Mohamed Riyas from the official event attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Kochi.
Symbolic Actions and Political Statements
The protest was initiated by Uduma MLA C H Kunhambu, who led a symbolic inauguration at Nullipady in Kasaragod shortly before the Prime Minister's official ceremony in Kochi. Following this, around 12:30 PM, a more prominent roadshow was organized, featuring PWD minister Riyas, MLAs Thottathil Raveendran and Ahmed Devarkovil, along with CPM district secretary M A Mehaboob.
The leaders traveled in an open jeep, with scores of CPM activists following on two-wheelers, creating a visible display of dissent along the newly developed highway stretch.
Riyas Condemns Exclusion as Insult to Kerala
Speaking to reporters, Riyas clarified that the roadshow was intended as a symbolic protest rather than a parallel inauguration. He expressed strong disapproval of the failure to invite the PWD minister to the NH-66 inauguration, labeling it an insult to the state of Kerala.
"The issue is not merely about inviting a minister," Riyas emphasized. "It is about the state's fundamental right to be represented at such significant events. In all previous National Highway inaugurations, the PWD minister has been present. That is the natural and expected protocol."
Questions Raised Over Democratic Norms
Riyas further questioned the presence of BJP state chief Rajeev Chandrasekhar at the official event, arguing that if politicians were being invited, then leaders from Congress, CPM, and CPI should have also received invitations. He stated that such selective practices raise serious questions about democratic norms and inclusivity in governance.
"If the intention behind this exclusion was to suggest that the LDF government had no role in the development of NH-66, the people of Kerala are well aware of the reality," Riyas asserted. He highlighted that Kerala has invested Rs 5,600 crore in NH development and that the project's success was largely due to the state government's persistent interventions and support.
Details of the NH 66 Development Projects
The Thalappady-Chengala section, which was the focus of the protest, involved six-laning at a cost exceeding Rs 2,650 crore. This segment is a crucial part of the Mumbai-Kanyakumari Economic Corridor and is expected to significantly enhance connectivity between Kasaragod, Kannur, and neighboring regions, including Mangaluru and Muzhappilangad.
Additionally, the six-laning of the Kozhikode Bypass from Vengalam to Ramanattukara, costing Rs 2,140 crore, is projected to reduce congestion, improve traffic capacity, and enhance overall road safety in the area. These developments underscore the substantial investments and efforts made by the state in infrastructure advancement.
The protest and parallel inauguration by LDF leaders underscore ongoing political tensions in Kerala, reflecting broader debates about state representation and recognition in national projects. The event has sparked discussions on the importance of inclusive governance and the acknowledgment of state contributions to major infrastructure initiatives.
