Structural Concerns Mount Over Widening Crack in Lucknow's Daliganj Underpass

Residents and daily commuters in Lucknow have expressed growing alarm as a significant fissure in the Daliganj underpass has reportedly widened further, casting serious doubts on the structural integrity and safety of this crucial transit route. The underpass, strategically located near the convention centre, serves as a vital link connecting the historic old city with newer urban developments, facilitating the movement of an estimated over 15,000 vehicles every single day.

Heavy Traffic and Rail Operations Compound Risks

Compounding the danger is the fact that trains traveling towards Rohilkhand and various other destinations pass directly over the railway tracks above the underpass approximately eight times daily. This constant vibration from heavy rail traffic is believed to be exacerbating the existing damage. Commuters have reported feeling distinct tremors whenever these trains pass overhead, intensifying fears about the stability of the structure.

"The vibration is quite evident and unsettling when a train crosses. With the cracks already clearly visible, it feels increasingly risky to use this route," stated Sandeep Singh, a concerned resident of Daliganj, echoing the sentiments of many.

From Minor Leakage to Major Structural Damage

The issue is not new. Local residents recall that the problem first emerged some time ago following periods of heavy rainfall in September. What initially appeared as minor water leakage has progressively deteriorated into clearly visible and concerning cracks in the underpass roof. Currently, observers note one prominent, major crack alongside another smaller fissure.

The deterioration is visibly advancing:

  • Plaster has repeatedly peeled off and fallen onto vehicles and pedestrians below.
  • In several sections, portions of the plaster have completely fallen away, exposing rusted reinforcement bars beneath.
  • The seepage and structural damage have now been officially acknowledged by municipal authorities.

Official Response and Pending Repairs

In response to the escalating concerns, the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) has confirmed that its engineering team has conducted an inspection of the site. Furthermore, communication has been formally initiated with Indian Railways to arrange for a comprehensive and detailed structural assessment of the underpass. This collaborative evaluation is deemed essential given the railway's involvement with the overlying tracks.

Concurrently, the North Eastern Railway (NER) PRO has assured the public that repair work will be taken up shortly, though a specific timeline for the commencement and completion of these critical safety repairs has not yet been publicly disclosed. The situation underscores the urgent need for infrastructure maintenance in high-traffic urban areas to prevent potential accidents and ensure public safety.
