Mamata Banerjee Loses Bhabanipur Seat to Suvendu Adhikari
In a major political setback, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has reportedly lost the Bhabanipur assembly seat to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari by a margin of over 15,000 votes. According to official data, Adhikari secured a victory with a margin of 15,114 votes, marking a significant defeat for the Trinamool Congress chief.
Adhikari, who had previously defeated Banerjee in Nandigram during the 2021 assembly elections, contested from both Bhabanipur and Nandigram in the current election cycle. His victory in Bhabanipur further consolidates his position as a key opposition figure in the state.
Banerjee Alleges Irregularities
Reacting sharply to early trends that showed a strong lead for the BJP, Banerjee alleged irregularities in the counting process. She claimed that she was physically assaulted at a counting centre and accused the Election Commission of bias, referring to it as the “BJP Commission.” Banerjee further alleged that over 100 seats were “looted” and described the outcome as an “immoral victory.”
Her comments have sparked a political controversy, with the BJP dismissing her allegations as baseless. The Election Commission has yet to respond to the accusations.
Political Implications
This defeat is a major blow to Banerjee's political stature in West Bengal, where she has been a dominant force for over a decade. The BJP's strong performance in the state, including its near-majority in the assembly, signals a significant shift in the political landscape. Adhikari has emerged as a key chief ministerial face for the BJP, further challenging the Trinamool Congress's hold on the state.
The election results come amid a broader political realignment in West Bengal, with the BJP making inroads into traditional TMC strongholds. The outcome is expected to have repercussions for national politics as well, with the BJP gaining momentum ahead of future elections.
