Mamata Banerjee Predicts Landslide Victory for TMC in 2026 Bengal Assembly Elections

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday made a bold prediction, claiming that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) will win over 226 seats in the upcoming 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. Addressing a party rally in Kolkata, Banerjee expressed unwavering confidence in her party's performance, stating, "We will form the government again in Bengal."

Confidence in TMC's Grassroots Support

Banerjee attributed the anticipated victory to the TMC's strong connection with the people of West Bengal. She highlighted the party's welfare schemes and developmental initiatives as key factors that have garnered widespread support across the state. The Chief Minister emphasized that the opposition, particularly the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Left Front, have failed to offer a viable alternative to the electorate.

"The people of Bengal have seen through the divisive politics of the BJP and the empty promises of the Left. They trust the TMC to deliver on its commitments," Banerjee said. She also criticized the BJP for its alleged attempts to destabilize her government through central agencies, asserting that such tactics would not sway voters.

Election Strategy and Campaign Plans

The TMC has already begun preparations for the 2026 polls, with Banerjee outlining a comprehensive campaign strategy. The party plans to focus on its achievements in education, healthcare, and infrastructure, while also addressing emerging issues such as job creation and women's safety. Banerjee urged party workers to reach out to every household and counter the opposition's narrative effectively.

Political analysts note that Banerjee's prediction of over 226 seats is ambitious, given that the TMC won 213 seats in the 2021 assembly elections. However, they acknowledge that the party remains dominant in Bengal politics, especially after its strong performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where it won 29 out of 42 seats.

Opposition Reactions

The BJP dismissed Banerjee's claims as "wishful thinking," with state BJP president Sukanta Majumdar asserting that the party is gaining ground in Bengal. "The people are fed up with TMC's corruption and misgovernance. They will vote for change in 2026," Majumdar said. The Left Front also criticized Banerjee, accusing her of making empty boasts to divert attention from pressing issues like unemployment and inflation.

Despite the criticism, Banerjee remains undeterred. She concluded her rally by urging supporters to work tirelessly for the party's victory, saying, "Bengal's future is bright, and the TMC is the only party that can ensure its progress."
