Mangaluru Braces for Major Traffic Changes During Four-Lane Road Construction
The Public Works Department (PWD) will commence significant development work on the crucial four-lane road connecting Pumpwell Circle to Karavali Junction in Mangaluru. This extensive infrastructure project is scheduled to begin on February 15 and will continue for a duration of four months, potentially causing substantial traffic disruptions throughout the city.
Police Commissioner Issues Traffic Advisory
Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has officially announced comprehensive traffic management plans to mitigate congestion during the construction period. The commissioner emphasized that the public's cooperation with police directives will be essential for maintaining orderly traffic flow.
"The construction work and necessary route alterations will inevitably cause traffic disruptions," Commissioner Reddy stated. "We earnestly request the public to cooperate fully with the police department to ensure minimal inconvenience during this essential infrastructure upgrade."
Temporary One-Way Systems and Alternative Routes
To facilitate public movement during the construction phase, temporary one-way traffic systems will be implemented on key roads:
- The road from Pumpwell Circle to Kankanady Old Road-Kankanady Junction (leading into Mangalore city)
- The road from Karavali Junction to Pumpwell Circle (leading out of Mangalore city)
These changes are expected to create significant traffic congestion, prompting authorities to recommend alternative routes for daily commuters.
Detailed Vehicle Diversion Plans
The police department has outlined specific diversion routes for different categories of vehicles:
- Vehicles from Pumpwell Junction to Karavali Junction: Will be redirected to travel via Kankanady Old Road.
- Vehicles entering from Talapady and Thokkottu: Should use alternative routes through Mahakalipadpu RuB, Morgan's Gate, Koti Chennaya Circle, or the Mangaladevi temple route.
- Heavy vehicles and KSRTC buses from BC Road to Lalbagh and KSRTC bus station: Must travel from Padil Junction towards Nanthoor.
- Heavy vehicles and KSRTC buses from Kerala towards the city: Should travel from Pumpwell Junction towards Nanthoor.
- Vehicles from inner city areas towards Pumpwell via Karavali Junction: Can continue their usual routes without changes.
Strict Parking Restrictions Implemented
To ensure smooth traffic movement, parking has been completely prohibited on both sides of several critical roads:
- Kankanady Junction-Pumpwell Road (Kankanady Old Road)
- Karavali Junction-Kankanady Road
- Kankanady-Falnir Highland Hospital Road
- Karavali Junction-Balmath Road
- Kankanady Bypass Road
Commissioner Reddy emphasized that strict enforcement of these parking restrictions will be maintained throughout the four-month construction period to prevent additional traffic bottlenecks.
The comprehensive traffic management plan reflects the city administration's proactive approach to balancing essential infrastructure development with minimizing public inconvenience during this substantial road upgrade project.
