Mayawati Criticizes Uttar Pradesh Budget 2026-27 as Superficial
Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president Mayawati has delivered a sharp critique of the Uttar Pradesh state budget for the fiscal year 2026-27, asserting that while it may seem appealing to the public, it falls short in addressing the genuine uplift and comprehensive development of all societal segments. In a detailed post on the social media platform X, the former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh articulated her concerns, emphasizing the need for concrete action over mere announcements.
Budget Lacks Focus on Actual Uplift and Development
Mayawati stated, "The 2026-27 budget appears to be more appealing and less focused on the actual uplift of the people and the development of all sections of society and the state." She highlighted that the budget seems to prioritize headline-grabbing exercises rather than substantive policies aimed at improving lives. According to her, this approach has once again dashed the hopes of citizens anticipating better days and sustainable improvements in their livelihoods.
Call for Timely Implementation and Accurate Data
She further stressed that the announcements and assurances made in the budget must be implemented promptly to avoid remaining merely on paper. "Nevertheless, the announcements and assurances made to the public must be implemented in a timely manner so that they do not remain merely on paper," Mayawati remarked. To enhance credibility, she advocated for making the budget speech tradition more concrete by providing accurate data on the ground implementation of the previous year's budget. This, she believes, would ensure transparency and accountability in governance.
Employment and Reservation Concerns Highlighted
Mayawati pointed out that the people of Uttar Pradesh are still awaiting employment opportunities that generate sustainable income, underscoring the necessity for government seriousness and activism in this regard. "In any case, the people of Uttar Pradesh are still awaiting employment opportunities that generate sustainable income, for which seriousness and activism on the part of the government are essential," she said. Additionally, she called for proper attention to reservations for Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Other Backward Classes (OBC), urging the government to expedite the completion of the recruitment backlog to benefit these communities.
Appeal for Constitutional Obligations
Drawing a comparison, Mayawati suggested that if the BJP government, like previous BSP governments, strives to fulfil the constitutional obligation of 'Sarvajana Hitay and Sarvajana Sukhay' (welfare and happiness of all) with devotion and honesty, it would be appropriate for the country and its people. She emphasized that the budget should align with this direction, serving as a means to improve the lives of the poor and marginalized sections of society. "The budget should also be in this direction. It should be a means of improving the lives of the poor," the BSP chief concluded, reinforcing her stance on inclusive and effective governance.
