Tension gripped Nandyal town on Sunday after a local resident vandalised a statue of former chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy. The accused, identified as Ch Jambulaiah, a resident of Chakalipeta in Nandyal, scaled the statue at the busy Srinivasa Nagar circle and struck its head with a stone, completely decapitating it. He then brandished the head before shocked onlookers, causing widespread panic.
Arrest and Investigation
Local police rushed to the scene and took Jambulaiah into custody. Preliminary investigations revealed that the accused is mentally disturbed with a documented history of severe alcohol addiction. Senior police officials confirmed his formal arrest and stated that a comprehensive investigation is underway to determine the exact sequence of events and prevent further political unrest.
Political Reactions
Dozens of YSRCP local leaders and cadres gathered at the Srinivasa Nagar circle, staging a sit-in protest and condemning the act. They demanded a thorough investigation, urging the police not to overlook a possible political conspiracy angle.
