A Congress MLA from Madhya Pradesh narrowly escaped with his life after his sports utility vehicle (SUV) struck a wall while attempting to avoid a cow on National Highway 44 near Banjari village in the Seoni district. The vehicle subsequently caught fire, but the legislator managed to exit the vehicle before the flames engulfed it completely.
The incident occurred under the jurisdiction of the Dhuma police station, as confirmed by local authorities. The MLA, whose identity has not been officially disclosed by the police, was traveling alone at the time of the accident. Preliminary investigations suggest that the driver lost control of the SUV while swerving to avoid a cow that had wandered onto the highway.
Sequence of Events
According to eyewitnesses, the SUV was traveling at moderate speed when the cow suddenly appeared on the road. The driver attempted a sharp turn to avoid hitting the animal, but the vehicle veered off the road and crashed into a concrete wall adjacent to the highway. The impact caused significant damage to the front of the SUV, and sparks from the collision ignited a fire that quickly spread to the engine compartment.
The MLA, who was seated in the front passenger seat, sustained minor injuries but was able to open the door and exit the vehicle before the fire intensified. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital in Seoni for medical examination, where doctors declared him stable and discharged him after first aid.
Police and Fire Response
Local police and fire brigade teams arrived at the scene within minutes of receiving the alert. Firefighters extinguished the blaze, but the SUV was completely destroyed. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, and preliminary reports indicate that no other vehicles or individuals were involved.
Speaking to reporters, a senior police officer from Dhuma police station stated, 'The MLA is safe and out of danger. We are grateful that he escaped unharmed. The accident appears to be a result of the driver's attempt to avoid the cow, which is a common hazard on this stretch of the highway.'
Reactions and Safety Concerns
The incident has sparked discussions about road safety and the presence of stray animals on national highways. Local residents have repeatedly raised concerns about the lack of fencing and animal crossings along NH 44, which passes through several villages and forested areas. Community leaders have urged the authorities to take immediate steps to prevent such accidents in the future, including installing speed breakers and better signage.
The Congress party expressed relief over the MLA's safety and thanked the first responders for their prompt action. Party workers gathered at the hospital to show support, and the MLA later addressed them, thanking his well-wishers and emphasizing the need for improved road infrastructure.
The cow involved in the incident reportedly escaped without injury, according to witnesses. However, animal rights activists have called for stricter enforcement of traffic rules to protect both humans and animals.
