Nashik Collector Initiates Magisterial Inquiry Following Temple Altercations
The Nashik district collector has taken decisive action by ordering a magisterial inquiry after two disturbing videos depicting pilgrims being assaulted within the sacred premises of the Trimbakeshwar temple circulated widely on social media platforms. The footage, which has sparked public outrage, shows separate incidents where security personnel, identified as ex-servicemen, are seen physically attacking devotees.
Details of the Two Separate Incidents
In the first viral video, a pilgrim hailing from Haryana is allegedly seen engaged in a physical confrontation with a temple security guard. The altercation escalated to an exchange of blows, resulting in the security guard sustaining an injury to his eye. The second video captures a different scenario where security personnel are observed kicking another pilgrim who reportedly attempted to jump the queue of waiting devotees.
Temple Trustees Provide Context for the Altercations
Kailas Ghule, one of the trustees of the Trimbakeshwar temple, clarified that both incidents occurred on March 1st. According to Ghule, the Haryana-based pilgrim had repeatedly obstructed the pathway of other devotees, insisting on additional time for meditation. Despite being relocated to a designated area, the pilgrim insisted on sitting in the main path and demanded entry into the sanctum sanctorum, which requires prior permission and is restricted to specific timings. This insistence allegedly triggered the initial argument and subsequent scuffle.
Regarding the second incident, Ghule alleged that the pilgrim was harassing women and deliberately skipping the queue. After female devotees raised complaints, security personnel intervened to remove him from the line, leading to another physical confrontation. Ghule confirmed that while no formal police complaint has been filed by any party, the incidents have been officially recorded in the security personnel's daily diary.
Official Response and Inquiry Mandate
Nashik collector Ayush Prasad has proactively ordered a suo moto magisterial inquiry to investigate these serious allegations. The inquiry will be conducted by Sub-Divisional Magistrate GVS Pawan Datta, who also serves as the assistant collector and Sub-Divisional Officer of Trimbakeshwar. Collector Prasad emphasized a comprehensive approach to the investigation, stating, "We are looking at it holistically. We want to understand the problem and its cause, and find a solution. Corrective measures and appropriate action against those guilty will be taken."
The inquiry aims to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding both incidents, assess the conduct of the security personnel, and determine appropriate disciplinary actions. This move underscores the administration's commitment to maintaining order and safety within one of Maharashtra's most revered pilgrimage sites while ensuring accountability for any misconduct.
