Nashik Grapples with Severe Water Wastage as Multiple Pipelines Burst
In a distressing development exacerbating Nashik's existing water supply challenges, at least seven major water distribution pipelines have burst at various locations across the city over the past four to five days. This series of incidents has resulted in the wastage of more than 10 lakh litres of precious treated water, according to municipal estimates. The timing could not be worse, as Nashik residents are already enduring severe water disruption and intermittent supply, forcing many to rely on tankers and alternative arrangements.
Uncoordinated Road-Digging Blamed for Catastrophic Damage
The primary cause of these pipeline failures has been identified as uncoordinated and negligent road-digging work carried out by various agencies and municipal contractors. Officials from the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) water supply department revealed that contractors undertaking excavation for Kumbh Mela-related infrastructure projects and utility duct laying are largely responsible. These contractors allegedly failed to coordinate with the water supply department before commencing digging operations and neglected to use metal detectors to identify underground pipelines and other critical utilities.
"Contractors are carrying out road-digging work without consulting the departments concerned. In several cases, water supply lines were damaged because contractors did not check the alignment of existing pipelines or use metal detectors before excavation," officials stated emphatically. This lack of due diligence has led to significant damage at key locations including near the Dream Castle signal on Makhmalabad Road, near ABB Circle on Trimbak Road, at Vadala Gaon, Papaya Nursery, and several other sites across Nashik.
Municipal Committee Outrage and Immediate Actions
The issue sparked intense debate during the Nashik Municipal Corporation standing committee meeting held on Thursday, where members expressed severe criticism toward the water supply department and civic administration for their apparent negligence. Standing committee members highlighted that lakhs of litres of treated water were wasted as some pipelines burst during active water supply periods, further aggravating the city's crisis.
Taking serious note of the situation, standing committee chairperson Machhindra Sanap directed the civic administration to initiate strict action against the contractors responsible for damaging the water pipelines. "Wasting lakhs of litres of water in such a situation reflects poor coordination and accountability," Sanap declared during the meeting. He emphasized that the negligence of contractors is utterly unacceptable, especially when Nashik is grappling with acute water shortages and numerous public complaints about disrupted and contaminated supply.
Sanap issued clear instructions to officials to ensure that no road-digging work is permitted without prior clearance from the concerned departments. He mandated the compulsory use of ground scanning with metal detectors before any excavation activities to prevent future incidents. Repair works have been carried out on a war footing to plug the leaks and restore supply, but the damage has already been done.

The pipeline bursts have not only wasted a massive volume of water but have also exposed systemic failures in inter-departmental coordination within the municipal framework.
