Nashik Police to Get Additional DCP for Traffic Ahead of Kumbh Mela

Nashik: The Nashik City Police are likely to receive an additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) ahead of the upcoming Kumbh Mela, according to senior officials. Currently, the Nashik City Police Commissionerate has four DCPs responsible for Zone 1, Zone 2, the Crime Branch, and Police Headquarters. The headquarters DCP also shares responsibility for managing the city's traffic branch.

Proposal for New DCP

Senior officials added, "If an additional DCP is sanctioned, the officer could be dedicated entirely to the traffic branch, as managing and planning traffic flow is crucial during the upcoming Kumbh Mela. A proposal in this regard has already been sent to the state government, and it is likely that the Nashik City Police Commissionerate will get the post of DCP soon."

Need for a Separate Traffic DCP

Senior police officials said the city police commissionerate never had a traffic DCP, although there has always been a need for a separate DCP considering the rising number of vehicles on city streets and the need to manage vehicular traffic. Nashik city has major roads spanning 2,100 kilometers, with a force of roughly 300 personnel to manage traffic on them.

While there is a separate post for ACP Traffic, the officer concerned has to continuously take permission from the DCP. "Since the DCP (HQ) is majorly focused on administrative work, the officer cannot provide their complete attention to traffic," officials said, adding that this calls for a separate DCP to handle traffic responsibilities.

Commissioner's Statement

Commissioner of Police Sandeep Karnik told the media that a proposal about the new DCP has already been sent, and there is a possibility that an officer will soon be appointed as the fifth DCP for the police commissionerate.
