NCP (SP) Threatens High Court Action Over Alleged Illegal Tree Felling in Thane

A major confrontation has erupted between the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) and municipal authorities in Thane over the alleged illegal felling of more than 400 trees at the Regional Mental Hospital. The political party has issued a stern warning, stating it will approach the Bombay High Court if civic officials continue their inaction regarding the significant loss of green cover.

Allegations of Multiple Legal Violations

NCP (SP) district President Manoj Pradhan has leveled serious accusations, claiming the tree cutting occurred without any approval from the tree authority. He asserts this action violates several key environmental protection laws, including the Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Protection and Preservation of Trees Act from 1975, the Wildlife (Protection) Act of 1972, and the Indian Forest Act dating back to 1927.

"Senior officials of the public works department carried out the felling in blatant violation of the law, with Thane Municipal Corporation officials seemingly casting a blind eye to the action," Pradhan alleged during a press conference on Thursday.

Ecological Impact and Municipal Inaction

The lush green foliage in the hospital area served as a vital habitat for various bird species, including kites, parrots, and mynas. Despite repeated requests from the NCP (SP), including a formal site visit conducted on December 8, 2025, the municipal corporation has taken no concrete action to address the alleged environmental destruction.

Even when the Wagle Estate police were approached regarding the matter, they sought a response from the corporation about whether it planned to file an official complaint. However, no progress has been made on this front either, according to party representatives.

Ultimatum and Legal Threats

Pradhan has delivered a clear ultimatum to municipal authorities. He warned that if the joint inspection and inquiry promised by the deputy commissioner and the garden department are not completed within eight days, and if cases are not filed against those responsible, the NCP (SP) will approach the Bombay High Court with a contempt petition.

The party's stance highlights growing frustration with what they perceive as systematic neglect of environmental regulations by civic bodies. This incident has escalated into a significant political and environmental issue in Thane, with potential legal ramifications that could set important precedents for tree protection in urban areas.
