Nagpur Municipal Corporation Prepares to Appoint 10 Nominated Corporators
Nearly three months after the civic elections, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is scheduled to fill ten nominated corporator positions during its general body meeting on April 20. This move is expected to further solidify the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) control over the municipal house.
BJP's Numerical Dominance Expected to Yield Seven Seats
With the backing of 102 corporators, the BJP is projected to secure seven of the ten nominated seats, reflecting its substantial numerical advantage in the corporation. The party has reportedly received over 700 applications for these positions and has already finalized six names.
The likely BJP nominees include Sanjay Thakre, Jitu Thakur, Subodh Acharya, Ritesh Gawande, Devendra Meher, and Vinod Baghel. As part of alliance arrangements, the BJP is expected to allocate one seat to its ally, Shiv Sena (Shinde faction), while the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), with six corporators, is set to receive one nominated position.
Congress Camp Grapples with Controversial Nomination
The political focus has shifted to the Congress party, where the probable nomination of Ketan Thakre—son of city Congress president Vikas Thakre—has sparked significant controversy. Opponents have criticized this as a "backdoor entry" into electoral politics.
Ketan Thakre, who did not participate in the recent civic polls, was initially expected to contest from the Dharampeth zone but withdrew due to concerns about a competitive race. His potential appointment through nomination is seen as a strategic maneuver by Congress to introduce him to active politics without undergoing an electoral challenge.
Congress insiders defend the nomination process, arguing that it is intended to acknowledge organizational contributions and public engagement rather than merely reward electoral success. The party, which holds 34 corporators, is likely to obtain two nominated seats, with businessman Atul Kotecha also being a contender.
Upcoming Zonal Chairperson Elections
Elections for zonal chairpersons are scheduled for April 17. The BJP is comfortably positioned in eight zones, while the Congress faces a competitive scenario in the Mangalwari and Ashi Nagar zones. In line with committee chairperson appointments, the BJP may designate women corporators to lead the zones.
Congress is considering nominating Seema Dawre as the chairperson for the Mangalwari zone. The party has received more than 300 applications for the nominated corporator positions, highlighting the intense interest in these appointments.
The nomination process underscores the ongoing political dynamics within Nagpur's municipal governance, with the BJP strengthening its hold and the Congress navigating internal and external challenges as it seeks to maintain relevance in the civic landscape.
