NSS Firmly Opposes Dog Squad Security for Mannam Samadhi Floral Tribute
In a significant development from Kottayam, the Nair Service Society (NSS) has taken a strong stance against proposed security measures for floral tributes at Mannam Samadhi. NSS general secretary G Sukumaran Nair has declared that the organization cannot approve inspections, including the deployment of a dog squad, as part of security protocols for offering floral tributes at the revered site.
Historical Precedent and Temple-Like Protection
Nair emphasized that the NSS leadership adopted a similar position back in 1996 when former Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao visited Changanassery. He explained that Mannam Samadhi is maintained and protected with the same sanctity as a temple complex, which forms the basis for their objection to intrusive security measures. Nair concluded his statement by noting that there would be no further comments on this matter, underscoring the organization's firm and final stance.
Security Arrangements for Vice President's Visit
The controversy arises in the context of Vice President C P Radhakrishnan's recent visit to the region. As part of the security preparations, the NSS Hindu College grounds were permitted for helicopter landing, and subsequently, the NSS guest house was also allowed for use. All these areas were incorporated into comprehensive security checks and designated as official security zones.
Break from Tradition Sparks Concern
NSS sources revealed that there has traditionally been a protocol of obtaining prior permission for floral tributes when distinguished guests arrive. However, this established practice was not followed during the recent visit, leading to the current impasse. The organization's refusal to allow dog squad inspections highlights their commitment to preserving the dignity and sanctity of Mannam Samadhi, which they view as incompatible with such security measures.
